Support Black Authors and Black-Owned Bookstores
I believe it is always important to read a great diversity of voices, but in this present moment it is especially important to read, think with, and support the voices of black writers.
This article by Seija Rankin has a long list of black-owned bookstores in the US. Please considering supporting these stores when looking for books to read, instead of giving more money to Jeff Bezos.
I hope to continue to expand the scope of my reading, and to pursue an ever-widening diversity of voices, but for now here is a brief list of books by black authors which I love and would recommend, especially science fiction and fantasy.
“Black Leopard, Red Wolf” by Marlon James
“Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler
“Friday Black” by Nana Kwame Adjeh-Brenyah
“Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
“What is Not Yours is Not Yours” by Helen Oyeyemi
“The Changeling” by Victor LaValle
